Penny McIvor- 2020 President

Penny McIvor has been a member and a volunteer of the Hyack Festival Association for over 7 years and has been an integral part of all of Hyack’s events. She is the treasurer for the New West Artists, and the bookkeeper of the New Westminster Arts Council. Penny is a fervent arts supporter and volunteered at the Raymond Burr Theatre for over 3 years. Penny has a history of facilitating arts and craft in her community. For 4 years, she was the President of the Quayside Community Board. She owns her own bookkeeping business, specializing in small business and not for profits. 

Lili De Capite - Past President (2019)

As a wife and mother of three active daughters, Lili strives to carry on the rich traditions of her community for the generations that follow. Being raised in a small town in southern Alberta instilled a desire to treasure the past and respect the hard work of our forbearers. 

Lili has been teaching piano lessons from her Queens Park home for over 15 years and is also a Yoga Instructor.  She belongs to many volunteer organizations such as Honour House Society and The Relief Society through the LDS church. She's also been a volunteer coordinator at her daughter's local public schools and is heavily involved in each activity they participate in such as competitive dance, youth choir, and musical theatre.

Lili lives by the quote "It's not what we receive that enriches our lives, it is what we give." Volunteerism is her way to truly give back to the organizations that do so much while having fun and strengthening community ties along the way!

Becci Dewinetz- President Elect 

Becci is a 4th generation New Westminster girl.  After attending Herbert Spencer Elementary she went on to graduate with Honors from NWSS in 1980.  The following year she was honored to be named Miss New Westminster 1981 and has been a member of the Hyack Festival Association for 35 years. 3 generations of Becci’s family have been involved in the Miss New Westminster Ambassador Program as her Mother ran in 1958 and Her daughter Maggie in 2012.  Becci is the Director in Charge of the Ambassador program and has been actively involved in running the program for 16 years now.  She loves mentoring the youth of this community and watching their growth under the direction of the outstanding Committee.  She is a wife and mother of 2 adult children and her career selling Real Estate with Re/Max here in New Westminster has kept her busy since 1992.  As a NEW board member in 2017, Becci is looking forward to learning the ropes and one day making history by being the first President of Hyack who was once a Miss New Westminster!

Gloria Munro - Treasurer

Gloria Munro is the Treasurer and the Director-in-Charge of the Hyack Festival Association's building.  She has been on the Board since 2009 and on the Executive since 2010.  Gloria is a Chartered Professional Accountant and, since 1983, has been in public practice in the area of small business accounting and tax. 

Gloria joined the North Road Merchant Association in 2004 and contributed to the process, in which it became an official business improvement area.  She has continued to serve as the Treasurer since 2005.

In 2013, Gloria founded the Families of Abuse Society (FOA).  The FOA is a registered charity that helps victims of domestic violence and abuse by providing necessities to support families in their transitions to safety.

The Certified General Accountant’s Association of British Columbia recognized Gloria’s outstanding service to the Association by presenting her with the J. M. MacBeth Award of Merit.

Deb Sutherland - Director

Debora Sutherland has extensive experience in residential, transitional and acute care sectors. She is an advocate of person-centered care, operations efficiency and best practice. Her previous 10 years experience as a clinical manager in acute care and residential care have provided Debora with a sound understanding of collective agreements, labour relations, implementing change and mitigating effects of change on frontline staff.

Peter Goodwin - Director

Peter was born and raised in New Westminster and resides in the city with his family.   His law practice, Goodwin & Mark specializes in civil litigation and real estate. Peter was called to the bar in 1983 and also has a degree in International Relations. 

Peter is currently president of the Westminster Building Strata Corporation.  He is also past president of Fraserside Community Services Society, Westminster Club, New Westminster Bar Association and Hyack Festival Association.  In his spare time, Peter enjoys golfing and reading a wide variety of history and likes to travel.   He is also an active participant in community affairs and has been actively involved in the sporting activities of his two children.

David MacGrotty - Director 

David is a husband and proud father. He is happily married to Karen, friend and father to Alysia and Matt. His career involvement includes twenty-five plus years of sales, contract writing and risk management experience in the insurance industry. He brings to the board a broad depth of involvement and giving back within the community. David continues to educate himself as a professional, engaging all challenges with an open mind and dealing with them fairly, professionally and with integrity. 

Kathy Glassie - Director 

Kathy Gifford Glassie is a fourth generation New Westminsterite and has lived in the Royal City since she was born. She attended F. W. Howay, representing her classmates as New Westminster’s 105 May Queen in 1975. She graduated from NWSS in 1980 and started at BC Biomedical Labs in 1982 as a Medical Lab Assistant, eventually becoming a Client Service Advisor at LifeLabs. 
Kathy has a passion for New Westminster’s history and traditions. She is helping to keep the Royal Lancers dance going by volunteering at the New Westminster Community Heritage Picnic, now in its fifth year. She is also working with a group of May Day enthusiasts to help make sure the 150th May Day will be memorable. Kathy enjoys spending time with her husband, Ian, her 3 adult sons and new daughter-in-law and their dogs, Bruce, Pepper, and Buddy. 

Mel Sing - Director 

Mel was born in Vancouver and raised in Langley, he and his wife Judy Sing choose to settle down in New Westminster in 2000. For the past 20 years Mel has worked as a foreman/superintendent helping to build many notable projects around New Westminster such as, Fraser River Elementary, the CN train bridge and much more around Vancouver! His career has taken him to many different places like Nunavut and Peace River and most recently Alberta. 
Mel became involved with Hyack through the Hyack Ambassador Program as his daughter Natasha Sing hold the current title of Miss New Westminster. He has no other experience on committees however he believes his career path has prepared him to take on this role.
Mel’s hobbies include golfing, playing badminton at the former Arenex, running a hockey group at moody park until 2016 and much more. Even though Mel has travelled to many different places he has always found New West to be central, have charm and to be a good place to create friendships around the community! The best aspects of the city for him have been the memories he’s created with his wife Judy, and with his two kids, Natasha and Adam. 

Michael Atherly - Director 

Michael John Atherley and his lovely wife of 30 years, Deborah Coppen, moved to New Westminster in 1995 for its small-town appeal and many programs it had to offer a family. He has worked 15 years for the City of BURNABY building department as an Electrical Inspector and also runs his own electrical contracting business for 32 years. In his spare time, he tends to the garden, builds planters for and propagate succulents. During summer vacations the last 6 years he’s been restoring a 1974 Airstream trailer located at Lake Tyee Resort in Washington.
Michael was a Scouts Leader for 13 years when his son Spencer and daughter Taylor moved from Beavers to Cubs and onto Scouts. Michael and Deborah became involved with Hyack when Taylor entered the Ambassador program in 2015 and achieved the title of Miss New Westminster and he has since played a minor role with Hyack taking photos for the Annual Ambassador and May Queen events.
Michael is passionate about engaging children and youth in programs that build self-esteem, social understanding and knowledge. Their daughter Taylor entered the Ambassador program as her way of being able to give back for what she received.

Heather Winnichuck (Murray) - Director 

Heather is a life long resident of New Westminster. She was one of the first graduates of the Queens Park Preschool and moved on to attend FH Howay and NWSS, graduating in 1980. Her studies led to a BSc of Nursing from UBC and a 28 year career in Public Health, most recently in the challenging yet satisfying role of Nursing Supervisor for a regional, multidisciplinary team of professionals who support FH residents living with HIV. 

Heather is a wife and mother of an adult son. Heather and her family have been involved with many parts of the New West community – members of the Royal City Curling Club, Sun Run leaders for many years and most recently, Heather has became a member of the Royal City Gogos (part of a national movement of grandmothers and "grand others" that form the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign of the Stephen Lewis Foundation and fundraise in support of African grandmothers who are caring for a generation of children who have been orphaned by AIDS).

In her free time, Heather enjoys socializing with friends, walking with her husband and dog, camping, travelling, dancing in a woman’s formation dance group and playing as much pickleball as possible!
Kathy’s favourite past-time at the moment is taking her dogs Bruce and Pepper for walks, rain or shine. 

 

Gerry Liu - Director 

BCMHA, Statistics, 2 years. Gerry is a Douglas College graduate who also attended St. Thomas Moore Colligate, St. Michaels, Sir Richard McBride and Hume Park schools in New Westminster growing up.  He ran for Municipal Counselor twice and is a 25 year member with the Fraternal Order of Eagles, serving all levels as Chair, Local President and Past President 7 times, and serving at the highest title as Past Provincial President.  He has kept busy with being the assistant coach for Hockey and Lacrosse and other activities with his children, as well as chairing for committees such as Kid’s Christmas, New Year’s Party, T-shirt sales, meat draws, 50/50, and Grey Cup and Superbowl parties.  One of Gerry’s favorite quotes is “Just Do It!”

April Bredon - Director 

April has been actively volunteering for a variety of organizations over the past 25 years. She served as Treasurer for the Tynehead Montessori Parent Advisory Committee for 3 years and was on the Board for Eureka Camp Society for six years, including three years as President.

She has assisted the Burnaby Hospice Society with several events and participated in the Canadian National Institute for the Blind fundraising events. She acted as Research Facilitation Consultant for a study conducted by BC Children's Hospital. In 2016/2017, she worked as General Manager for Valley Therapeutic Equestrian Association. She has experience with team building, volunteer recruitment, marketing, and fundraising.
