Becci Dewinetz- 2021 President
Becci Dewinetz has been involved with the Hyack Festival Association for 40 years and is an integral part of all of Hyack’s history and future. Crowned Miss New Westminster 1981 she is the first past, Miss New Westminster, to become President. Becci has served Hyack in many capacities, from Committee Chair of the Hyack Ambassador Committee to serving as a director for presidents before her.
Becci is a celebrated New Westminster realtor and working with RE/MAX All Points Realty, Becci is proud to be part of, not only, the number one real estate office in New Westminster, but the top Re/max office for Western Canada as well. As an involved wife, and mother of two, Becci has to be well organized and has developed excellent skills in patience and time management. Becci's husband and children are an important part of who she is, and the success she is today.
Penny McIvor - Past President (2020)
Penny McIvor has been a member and a volunteer of the Hyack Festival Association for over 8 years and has been an integral part of all of Hyack’s events. She is the treasurer for the New West Artists, and the bookkeeper of the New Westminster Arts Council. Penny is a fervent arts supporter and volunteered at the Raymond Burr Theatre for over 3 years. Penny has a history of facilitating arts and craft in her community. For 4 years, she was the President of the Quayside Community Board. She owns her own bookkeeping business, specializing in small business and not for profits.
Deb Sutherland - President Elect
Debora Sutherland has extensive experience in the residential, transitional, and acute care sectors. She is an advocate of person-centered care, operations efficiency, and best practice. Her previous 10 years of experience as a clinical manager in acute care and residential care have provided Debora with a sound understanding of collective agreements, labour relations, implementing change, and mitigating effects of change on frontline staff.
Michael Athery - Vice President
Michael John Atherley and his lovely wife of 30 years, Deborah Coppen, moved to New Westminster in 1995 for its small-town appeal and many programs it had to offer a family. He has worked 15 years for the City of BURNABY building department as an Electrical Inspector and also runs his own electrical contracting business for 32 years. In his spare time, he tends to the garden, builds planters for and propagate succulents. During summer vacations the last 6 years he’s been restoring a 1974 Airstream trailer located at Lake Tyee Resort in Washington.
Michael was a Scouts Leader for 13 years when his son Spencer and daughter Taylor moved from Beavers to Cubs and onto Scouts. Michael and Deborah became involved with Hyack when Taylor entered the Ambassador program in 2015 and achieved the title of Miss New Westminster and he has since played a minor role with Hyack taking photos for the Annual Ambassador and May Queen events.
Michael is passionate about engaging children and youth in programs that build self-esteem, social understanding and knowledge. Their daughter Taylor entered the Ambassador program as her way of being able to give back for what she received.
Gloria Munro - Treasurer
Gloria Munro is the Treasurer and the Director-in-Charge of the Hyack Festival Association's building. She has been on the Board since 2009 and on the Executive since 2010. Gloria is a Chartered Professional Accountant and, since 1983, has been in public practice in the area of small business accounting and tax. Gloria joined the North Road Merchant Association in 2004 and contributed to the process, in which it became an official business improvement area. She has continued to serve as the Treasurer since 2005. In 2013, Gloria founded the Families of Abuse Society (FOA). The FOA is a registered charity that helps victims of domestic violence and abuse by providing necessities to support families in their transitions to safety.
The Certified General Accountant’s Association of British Columbia recognized Gloria’s outstanding service to the Association by presenting her with the J. M. MacBeth Award of Merit.
Alan Wardle - Secretary
Board member 2012-2016 and Hyack Festival member and participant/volunteer since 1997 including Treasurer, Vice President positions.
40-year TELUS career employee including administration and technical assistance to business offices and executive homes with mostly client-facing positions.
Community volunteer work includes Scouts Canada (12years) as leadership and funding projects. New Westminster Hyack Football (10 years) photographer and team funding projects/ sponsorship opportunities. Other minor volunteer positions in Salmonbellies Lacrosse, New Westminster minor softball, Sapperton pensioner hall, Telecommunications workers union shop steward. Telus joint panel health & safety committee chairman. Married happily for 35 years with six children to Debbie Wardle.
David MacGrotty - Director
David is a husband and proud father. He is happily married to Karen, friend and father to Alysia and Matt. His career involvement includes twenty-five plus years of sales, contract writing and risk management experience in the insurance industry. He brings to the board a broad depth of involvement and giving back within the community. David continues to educate himself as a professional, engaging all challenges with an open mind and dealing with them fairly, professionally and with integrity.
Kathy Glassie - Director
Kathy Gifford Glassie is a fourth generation New Westminsterite and has lived in the Royal City since she was born. She attended F. W. Howay, representing her classmates as New Westminster’s 105 May Queen in 1975. She graduated from NWSS in 1980 and started at BC Biomedical Labs in 1982 as a Medical Lab Assistant, eventually becoming a Client Service Advisor at LifeLabs.
Kathy has a passion for New Westminster’s history and traditions. She is helping to keep the Royal Lancers dance going by volunteering at the New Westminster Community Heritage Picnic, now in its fifth year. She is also working with a group of May Day enthusiasts to help make sure the 150th May Day will be memorable. Kathy enjoys spending time with her husband, Ian, her 3 adult sons and new daughter-in-law and their dogs, Bruce, Pepper, and Buddy.
Peter Goodwin - Director
Peter was born and raised in New Westminster and resides in the city with his family. His law practice, Goodwin & Mark specializes in civil litigation and real estate. Peter was called to the bar in 1983 and also has a degree in International Relations.
Peter is currently president of the Westminster Building Strata Corporation. He is also past president of Fraserside Community Services Society, Westminster Club, New Westminster Bar Association and Hyack Festival Association. In his spare time, Peter enjoys golfing and reading a wide variety of history and likes to travel. He is also an active participant in community affairs and has been actively involved in the sporting activities of his two children.
Virginia (Ginny) Bociek - Director
Ginny was raised in Ottawa and obtained her BScN from the University of Ottawa. She is fluent in French. She worked in Cardiac Care at VGH for several years and for the past 20 years she has worked in Research and Development in the Biotech/Pharmaceutical industry. Her experience includes Project Management, Quality Assurance, and interacting with Regulatory Agencies such as FDA and Health Canada.
Ginny has lived in New Westminster since 1997 and feels very lucky to have raised her daughter in this very special community. She has been an active volunteer in school and other activities. This includes Queen’s Park Pre-school (school executive), Ecole Glenbrook Middle School (EGMS) ski club, PAC (Secretary 2012/Chair 2013), School Planning Committee, and Graduation Chair, NWSS Dry Grad Committee 2017, New Westminster Heritage Home Tour, and BC Provincial Election.
Heather Winnichuck (Murray) - Director
Heather is a life long resident of New Westminster. She was one of the first graduates of the Queens Park Preschool and moved on to attend FH Howay and NWSS, graduating in 1980. Her studies led to a BSc of Nursing from UBC and a 28 year career in Public Health, most recently in the challenging yet satisfying role of Nursing Supervisor for a regional, multidisciplinary team of professionals who support FH residents living with HIV.
Heather is a wife and mother of an adult son. Heather and her family have been involved with many parts of the New West community – members of the Royal City Curling Club, Sun Run leaders for many years and most recently, Heather has became a member of the Royal City Gogos (part of a national movement of grandmothers and "grand others" that form the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign of the Stephen Lewis Foundation and fundraise in support of African grandmothers who are caring for a generation of children who have been orphaned by AIDS).
In her free time, Heather enjoys socializing with friends, walking with her husband and dog, camping, travelling, dancing in a woman’s formation dance group and playing as much pickleball as possible!
Kathy’s favourite past-time at the moment is taking her dogs Bruce and Pepper for walks, rain or shine.
Karen Davidson - Director
Karen Davidson is a long time resident of the Royal City. Karen is a food and lifestyle blogger. She is the creative director at Karen Ann Davidson and focuses on local food inventors, companies, and creators by sharing their products and stories.
Karen is published quarterly in Cultivate magazine. Karen fosters relationships and encourages growth in all relationships and pursues quality experiences wherever she may be. Karen has been part of the Hyack Association family since 1988 where she was given the title of Miss Congeniality. She recognizes the deep benefits of giving back and she is encouraging to all those around her.
As a wife and mother to two grown children, you will find Karen looking for more adventure but you will not find her hang gliding. She prefers to keep her feet closer to the ground and savour a 7-course meal, in nature looking for a bald eagle or eating her favourite snack - almond butter and honey; a little nutty and darn sweet - and this defines her perfectly.
Leslie Ducommun - Director
Leslie is a new member of the Hyack Association as well as the Hyack Ambassadors program. However not so new to the Royal City. Leslie served as Herbert Spencer Elementary School represented as Register Bearer in the May Day Celebrations and later represented New Westminster as a Hyack Princess. Leslie spent 20 years in Los Angeles, CA in the film and television industry. During her time in Hollywood, Leslie owned and took public, a number of business ventures. She was also nominated for a cable “ACE” award for producing HBO’s comedy one hour special “Piece of Mind”. Leslie moved back from the Royal City with her four children, all whom attended school in New Westminster. Leslie is honored to be able to give back to her community that provided such wonderful memories growing up.
