What is community? Is there something that immediately makes you think about community? Is it helping your neighbour, shovelling someone else's driveway, delivering a warm meal or simply smiling and saying hello when you are hiking along a trail?

At the Hyack Festival Association, we think about community every time we put together an event, when we work with our invaluable volunteers and when we get together with our Festival representatives, for example.

Volunteers work to improve their community, enhancing quality of life in their neighborhoods and cities. Wikipedia explains volunteering as “generally considered an altruistic activity and is intended to promote goodness or improve human quality of life. In return, this activity can produce a feeling of self- worth and respect. There is no financial gain involved for the individual. Volunteering is also renowned for skill development, socialization and fun. It is also intended to make contacts for possible employment. Many volunteers are specifically trained in the areas they work, such as medicine education, or emergency rescue. Others serve on an as-needed basis”. Volunteers have always been a key component to the success of the Hyack Festival Association, since its inception. Each year we recognize a volunteer who has exemplified the spirit of what is means to be a volunteer. This year it was to our float driver, who volunteered hours to deliver our float to our many parades. Our volunteers are involved in the many aspects of Hyack, including the Hyack International Parade, the Antique Fair, and Uptown Fest! as well as helping in the office and in the many other Hyack activities and programs. Hyack has always had a strong core of volunteers. This year, we are focusing on attracting new, young energetic volunteers to strengthen and grow our organization and our community.
