The Hyack Festival

The Hyack Festival in New Westminster, BC is a long-standing annual event that is supported by the City of

New Westminster, Global TV, and many cultural and arts stakeholders.

This year's theme is "Rooted in Tradition, Blossoming into the Future".

Our four-day festival, during what the City has proclaimed "Hyack Week" now for 47 years, incorporates some of the best New Westminster traditions and provides Community Engagement.

The Festival starts with:

the May Day tea on May 22, celebrating 149th May Day, the longest running celebration of its kind in the Commonwealth;

Continues on May 25th with the 48th Hyack International Parade, which includes more than 100 entries from all over the lower mainland and the Pacific North West. The parade includes our Community Float, also themed "Rooted in Tradition, Blossoming into the Future" that promotes New Westminster Heritage by displaying historical and archival photos collected from community partners;

Our Hyack Ambassadors, participants in our leadership program, ride the float and interact with the community during the festival, volunteering in seniors homes, and at many community events;

The Historical Vancouver Trolley, escorting the May Day Suite and Royal Knights in the Parade, and later transporting dignitaries and other participants attending the Hyack Festival weekend;

Uptown Street Fest! where artists and artisans interact with the public, practice and sell their crafts, and where cultural groups perform and promote their traditions;

The Honourable Seymour Battery firing;

The Rose Planting at City Hall;

and concludes with the May Day Community Heritage Picnic in Canada’s oldest active wooden Armoury, with traditional century-old Lancer quadrille dances

The Hyack Festival promotes, celebrates and preserves our history and traditions as a city while igniting our "Community Spirit" with arts and culture through inclusive, intergenerational and free

public engagement.
