WORDS TO LIVE BY

"Take a risk every once in a while, life is only so long, you don't want to leave this place with any regrets."

Makena is the daughter of Aaron and Kim Thomas, and is sister to Summer and Lilah. She is a grade 11 student at New Westminster Secondary, where she is involved with Interac Club, Student Voice, the Ndub Student Press, Vocal Jazz, and Chamber Choir. Makena has wanted to be a singer since she was little, and has taken voice and guitar lessons. She is a teaching assistant at Lindbjerg Academy, assisting the teachers with vocal warmups and choreography, as well as working with all the little kids. She has also volunteered as a reading buddy at NWPL. Makena is considering pursuing either journalism, fincancial business or law school during post-secondary. Her dream is to travel the world, to indulge in other cultures and really experience everything she can.

Makena is inspired by her grandfather because he's worked endlessly since the age of 16 to give her family the life he always wanted.

Makena's most prized possession is her guitar, as music is a huge part of her life. It calms her, excites her, and gets her through all the tough times.

When not spending time with the Hyack Festival in the Royal City, Makena enjoys exploring the downtown area. She especially loves
discovering new coffee shops and stores, and walking along the river.

Her proudest moment in life, so far, was winning runner-up two years in a row at Provincials in the musical theatre category. "You never think that in a room full of fantastic performers you're going to be the one who stood out to the majorly successful adjudicators."

If Makena could trade places with anyone, past or present, she would love to magically wake up as Emma Watson one day. Not only because she is absolutely stunning and successful, but because she uses her platform to try and make a change in the world.

If she could give a piece of advice to her 13-year-old self, Makena would tell herself not to care what others think. "Everyone has their own things to worry about, they're not going to notice that almost invisible pimple on your forehead."

Makena believes she would be a good ambassador because she loves making other people smile. "Ever since I was little, I've wanted to be involved in this program because I was always in awe whenever I saw the pretty princesses in their big dresses. Now I understand the responsibility and honour of this role and I couldn't be more excited to help out around the community, represent the city and
spread kindess in these times when little kids might really use some cheering up."
