WORDS TO LIVE BY
“You have zero control over what life throws at you, it’s how you react that counts.”
Sophie is the daughter of Jennifer Duprey and Neal Steinman, and is sister to Zachary and Tyler. She is in grade 11 at New Westminster Secondary. Sophie is a high level classical ballet dancer, and has trained with the Goh Ballet, the Alberta Ballet School and the Royal Winnepeg Ballet.

Sophie's proudest moments are whenever she is performing for others or herself. Dance has taught her courage and confidence; therefore she feels most accomplished whenever she performs. She is most satisfied when she is pushing herself.

Her most treasured keepsake is a an old ballet costume of her mother's, a recreation of Evelyn Hart's famous Romeo and Juliet costume. "Ballet has been a large aspect of my life and my mother's, so the dress is very sentimental."

Sophie also enjoys mountain sports such as hiking, snowshoeing and especially skiing. This year, she is an Assistant Coach for the Special Olympics Ski Racers. Her other hobbies include track, kayaking, baking, art and travel.

Sophie thanks her parents for their constant support. No matter her new interests and endeavours, they have supported her, always had her back and inspired her to strive for more.

Sophie is most inspired by Greta Thunberg, because any young person who stands up for what they believe in, and takes action is an inspiration. "I may be a young girl; however, that cannot stop me from making an impact in my community."

Other than Hyack Festival Week, Sophie's favorite thing about our Royal City is the sense of community and positive atmosphere. Whether she is at the farmer’s market, a local event, or simply strolling down the street she is always greeted by many smiling faces enjoying our lovely city. No matter where she is in New Westminster she feels extremely safe and welcome.

If Sophie could witness a historic event, she would like to attend the Paris Peace conference. The treaty of Versailles saved so many lives, and too observe an event pertinent enough to settle such a horrific affair would be a privilege.

Sophie believes a good Ambassador is positive and enthusiastic, and is able to engage diverse communities. Sophie has embraced these qualities in her performance training and her life experiences, and looks forward to strengthening these skills through the Hyack Ambassador Leadership Program.
