“First Night” is the first evening of the New Westminster Hyack Ambassador Awards Gala weekend, on Friday, April 17 at the Justice Institute of BC beginning at 6:30 pm.
This evening showcases our five outstanding Hyack Ambassador Leadership Candidates in two presentation areas. The first presentation will see each Candidate deliver their “Senior Mentor” speech about their new friends from Thornebridge Gardens Senior Residence. This is a very successful partnership between our City’s youth and our valued Senior Citizens. Each Hyack Ambassador Candidate is partnered with a Thornebridge Senior and over casual meetings, the Seniors answer interview questions from the Candidates about their life stories and experiences.
Under direction and coaching from Tillicum Toastmasters, the candidates then write and prepare a speech that they will present at “First Night” as part of the overall adjudication for the public speaking award of Top Communicator, sponsored by Karen Davidson, Lifestyle Blogger. A very interesting, sometimes amusing, but always heartwarming example of bridging the generation gap between youth and seniors!
The second presentation of the evening will see the young women, all Royal City residents, present a personal display of something they are passionate about in their lives - be it music, art, athletics, academics, dance, home arts, competitive sports or any area of interest they wish to share.
The top three talents will be announced and invited to re-perform the following evening at the “Evening of Stars” Awards Gala at Douglas College. The Top Talent Award, the Bill Brown Memorial Award, is a stand-alone award and not included in the overall tally for the title scholarship of Miss New Westminster 2020.
Also being presented at “First Night”, will be the Volunteer Hours Certificates recognizing the hundreds of hours of volunteer service and city representation the retiring Hyack Ambassador Leadership Team 2019 has provided to our community over the past year. This recognition highlights our program’s mandate of “Serving Our Community - Representing Our City”.
